Saturday we played in Roermond for the first time. The nice people behind Rockschool Open Air put up this festival for the first time and had no one less than their major and people from the local government attending. All festivals needs some time to establish, and there are always a few hiccups here and there. This year someone – I think he has a Norse origin – were a bit too enthusiastic behind his drum kit kicking through the bass-drum skin (how metal is that!). It took some time to get a new one, so the sets of the bands later had to be cut a bit short. We had a nice time there though, and especially for me meeting up with the Bergeners of Batallion. If you have ever met anyone from Norway, you know the Viking way of drinking. There were no exceptions Saturday…

This gig was our last before the summer kicks in. The plan is now to fully focus on making a new album. We already have around 7 songs we are working on and we are all super enthusiastic about them! We are in a very creative place at the moment, ideas are flowing! We found a new place we will do preproduction of the new songs. Very cool and relaxing place. It is really fun for me this time to be part of this song making process from the beginning. A few days ago Frank and me sat down with a brand new song we ended up really happy about. Today I am off to work in the studio with René on some other new songs. I can’t tell you much about the direction of the songs, but I can say it is going really well! And one more thing: the Gathering never stops surprising

There is so much to tell about this trip! I could make this a really long story , but I’ll try to cut it down a bit

A few surprises turned up before leaving home:

A week before the benefit concert we got some really good news from the Dutch artist organisation Sena. They wanted to help us by sponsoring 5000 Euros for our flights (it is quite expensive going to Chile from Holland, so this helped a lot!!).

Just after this, Hans got a really bad ear-infection (he was almost deaf on his right ear!) and had to go to the emergency hospital for treatment and I got a soar throat. At the same time we were all still very busy getting things ready. A bit hectic and stressful, but we had good spirits and looked forward to the trip a lot!

Since I live in Norway I went down to Holland a bit earlier to do a few rehearsals before going West. Marjolein, Frank and me prepared for our acoustic show at Radio Futuro in Chile (check out our little clip here).  The day after we did a full band rehearsal and packed all our stuff for the next day. Friday morning we all met up at Franks place together with our super cool sound engineer Wouter and off we went to Düsseldorf. Only René wasn’t with us, because he was leaving with another flight as he would stay longer in Chile with his girlfriend Gema, who was already in Chile preparing for the show.

In Paris we had a flight transfer and there we met some TG fans who were also going to Chile (hi Rodrigo, hope you made it to the show!). The flight went pretty good, although it was 14 hours. Some of us where lucky to get some sleep in the plane, but some didn’t at all.

Down on the ground, we met René and Gema again and also our friend Fran. The Dutch Embassy in Chile was so kind to sponsor us with a van and driver for the weekend (it was a lot to do in short time, so this was fantastic help to get, driving back and forth to venue several times, radio station, interviews etc). The driver picked us up at the airport and took us to the hotel for a quick shower and to get some food. Then we went off to the studio in Radio Futuro.

We met a group of really nice TG fans outside the radio station who welcomed us with open arms and lots of smiles. They came with us in to the studio to have a little meet&greet and listen to us playing. Frank, Marjolein and me did acoustic versions of Treasure and No One Spoke plus our cover of Daniel (by Bat for Lashes). The guys at Radio Futuro were really cool, and made us feel very welcome. Thanks a lot for a superb time!

After finishing, we had a few hours to walk about in the city. We decided to hit for San Cristóbal, one of the few mountains in the city. It was a beautiful day, sunny and we all got the feeling of being little bit on holiday: eating empanadas, sightseeing a bit of the city and relax for a few hours. On top of this mountain we had some food and shared half of it to the stray dogs coming over with really sad and hungry eyes…

Being on this top, watching the sun go down in the massive city, just below the huge statue of virgin Mary gave us time to take everything in a bit. For me it had been such a few hectic weeks (even months) and now I was really feeling the beauty of it all, actually making it to Chile with the guys doing a benefit concert, and be able to help some people in need!

The guys went out for dinner in the evening, but I had a soar throat and went to bed early to get as much rest as much as possible before the show. After all we had been travelling for almost 24 hours! The reception woke me up twice though, once with flowers for Marjolein to be delivered and once with some other request. Later on I wake up around 6:30 of my bed shaking.. another aftershock..quite weird to feel, lying on 8^th floor… but it was just a small one, and I was so spaced out of tiredness, I managed to fall back to sleep again.

Next morning we had a great breakfast together, got a little cup of Chilean honey from the breakfast buffet and got some Strepsils for my throat (thanks Fran!!). Some went off to the venue for prepare for sound check, some stayed at the hotel. At the venue we got to meet the guys of Crisalida and Paula Barouh (the support bands) and the amazing crew of Teatro Caupolican! They were all super helpful and so nice to us!

There have been a lot of activities going on before and around this concert. One thing was family and friends of The Gathering also supported with money and Radio Futuro gave away 65 tickets to a school in Chile. It was also organized for people to donate food and water by the door that would be distributed to people in need by Hogar de Cristo foundation. The Gathering also gave away CD’s, merch and other goodies for people to get as well as doing a big meet & greet after the show with the winners. All this was arranged by volunteers, the crew at Teatro Capolican, the Gathering community in Chile and our fantastic Gema who did an amazing job getting it all together!
For me this whole concert was extra exciting, knowing that around 3500 people were waiting just downstairs to see The Gathering and they had never seen me before. I remember my third gig with the Gathering in June at Graspop/Belgium in front of ca 4-5000 people, I really enjoyed it. So I crossed my fingers it would be just as fun here. I have to say, it was so cool playing Graspop, but doing this was…absolutely wonderful! You could almost touch the atmosphere; it was magic from first note! The people at Teatro Caupolican blew me away with their warm welcome, their beautiful presence and fantastic support! I hoped for a nice response, but we got something better. I will never forget it!

This night we all raised USD 25.000 for the Red Cross in Chile in co-operation with Chile Ayuda. They will do some really good work with the money. The lottery (with number one prize René’s Eastwood guitar!) raised another USD 2.500 especially for the fishermen in Pichilemu. And also the Hogar de Cristo foundation will take care of distributing over 90 boxes with food and water that was given by the door. Amazing! Thank you so much!!

After the show we felt the need to sit down a bit and just let it all sink in, so we went to a nice bar with the promoter and some friends to have a proper pisco sour and talk about the night, celebrating it went so well!

During our short stay in Chile we got to meet so many beautiful people and talked to some telling us we actually made a difference coming over. One sweet girl met us at the airport in Santiago. She told me she lost her aunt in the earthquake and also her family experienced a lot of other damages. Really heavy things… She was standing there, smiling, and she told me how happy she was to meet us and that she truly enjoyed the concert the night before… Then I just have no words anymore…

The day after the concert we already had to go back to Holland. It was a crazy trip, many hours of travelling, little sleep, some pain killers, one lost voice, one eye infection, one deaf ear, but sooo many many happy memories that will stay with us forever! J

Chi chi chi le le le viva Chileeeeeee!!

Aschaffenburg. Arrived early so had time for a little walk, do some shopping and had tea in a local coffee bar with a very nice waiter. Also got to see a bit of a castle that was close to the venue. It was beautifully lit up in the evening with a nice little park surrounding it. We meat-eaters got a super nice dinner at the venue, and the poor vegetarian in Autumn were so lucky to get a massive lump of feta cheese to digest. It’s a bit funny to see the lack of creativity some places when it comes to vegetarians. After all we were in the land of schnitzels and sausages so what to expect, eh? After dinner our tour manager and excellent sound engineer were in a funny mood and it all ended with a little friendly food fight and fries flying everywhere. This venue was said to have 250 gigs a year, Hypocrisy playing the day before and Lacuna Coil coming up a few days later. I dunno, but maybe they had all been seeing too many bands or all had a massive hangover from last night, because there was a few times we were not sure if the audience actually were awake..

Despite this they seemed to be very happy and wanted encores as well.. We ended the day on the bus with Marjolein’s brilliant idea making Caipirinhas together with merch boss, Gema’s amazing cucumber ice crushing!

The day in Vosselaar was also freezing cold outside, so was staying inside as much as possible. Found that there were cereals available for breakfast and one of the guys went out to buy some soya and rice milk which made my day! But I was so late up that I never managed to finish off my breakfast before sound check and suddenly it was dinner time! What a lazy rock’n roll life! Our shows are always in the evening so no point in getting up at 7 in the morning jumping about when needing to save the energy for later;-). It was also a nice surprise to get to meet Johan, the bassplayer from Stream of Passion, who is also a good friend of the Autumn guys. One thing to mention was that the backstage was below the stage without another exit but going via the stage. Some of us got trapped there during Autumns show, and Marjolein spent the time efficiently head banging through the gig drying her hair after showering. The venue Biebob was pretty filled up when Autumn hit the stage and warmed up everyone. As always they did a great job, with Marjan singing superbly (or very “goodly” as some of us would like to say ). A very nice crowd to us which Marjolein made laugh (including me) with her little silly jokes in French After the show it was shower time and then almost straight to bed for me (the boring life of a singer ). After party downstairs in the bus was as always kicked off with Volume 4.

Lille had the most spacey backstage and a great chef! We all got well fed and had lots of space to tumble on. Outside where our bus was standing there was a security man with a very angry Schafer dog who thought René looked a bit suspicious, so he jumped off his lead and gave René a quite scary hug…which I don’t think René appreciated very much. Back in the venue the turn up was excellent, and the crowd was really special that night I think. One of a kind for sure. We also had a little surprise having Marjan (Autumn) up on stage doing Saturnine with us, and it was soo nice and emotional! She is such a great singer and a wonderful human being!! you can check a video from that performance here.

Last day off the tour was Valentines Day in Paris and started with arriving in the sun to the most beautiful but unpractical venue of the tour at Elysée Montmartre. Parking a double decker tour bus with hanger on the main street in Paris includes planning and quick reactions. After unloading the bus drove off for the day and we got a million stairs to walk to get the equipment to the venue. Luckily we came so early we all had time to do a little walk in the center. I went off with Marjolein and our super web boss Alex who is native Parisian up towards amazing Sacré-Cœur and ate a crepe on the way. I had been fighting getting a cold the last days, and it seemed to be kicking in here in Paris so I stepped quickly inside again as is was pretty cold outside. Two good guys in Autumn got me a fantastic take away Indian for dinner in the evening as we had a buy out.

During the day we noticed that the Autumn guys were busy doing “stuff” and not hanging out so much. We also needed to lock our back stage a few times…last day of tour includes secrets…

Our friends in Os’moz would be opening the night with their atmospheric music. We girls got some beautiful roses from them after the show; really sweet! Thanks During 3,5 weeks on the road with Autumn there came out quite a few intern jokes including rather childish (but great fun!) silliness. So we made a few huge white signs saying some of these jokes walking up right in front of stage with them above our heads getting laughs and big smiles from Autumn (including a few out of tune notes ). The very polite French got the joke and laughed with us

They got us back massively afterwards filling our backstage with balloons and lots of funny gifts for each of us! So sweet and cute!! I bought a bunch of silly socks before the tour to make sure they would separate from everyone else’s when washing in big scales. This included some incredibly silly pink Hello Kitty socks which ended up walking around the bunks during the nights, constantly turning up on a new place.. I got it back with two Hello Kitties well connected;-) René bought himself a new delay pedal during the tour which he worked on every day trying out new stuff. He got of course a home made card board pedal, Frank a mobile (as he is always on his iphone) etc.

Our show was very special and emotional. There is one thing remarkable with the French audience. They actually pay attention to you and are totally quiet listening; it is very special and beautiful! For some reason this day also started with quite a few odd things. I got a cold the day before (hardly any voice at all when I woke up in the morning) so I was a bit worried, but drank lots of good tea and vitamins to boost the immune system so I made it through the show. We invited Marjan again on stage to sing Saturnine but for some reason the mic she was handed didn’t work, so we had to improvise a bit. Luckily she is so good she managed perfectly anyway! Then on the next song the guitar strap of Marjolein’s bass fell off so she had to finish the song with out the strap (well done, Lein!!).

We had to get quickly out of the venue to load the bus so off we rushed, which included Jens (Autumn) dropped a heavy flight case on his feet badly hurting three of his toes. Then we went off to the bus, and one of the guys opened the door and unfortunately our super bus driver came by getting the door straight in his head, so off we went to the hospital to get his scalp stitched up. Luckily he was OK to drive on with a minor injury! What a crazy day of unlucky happenings in some kind of a beautiful wrapping!! Anyway in the end off we went with our noses pointing towards Holland and home (and Bergen afterwards for me), so we were having some fun getting and giving silly gifts that would remind us of the tour.
Got a few hours sleep before waking up in Oss/Holland to unload everything to our rehearsal room. Hugo was there with two of his beautiful children’s, was so nice to see him again. Then it was to say goodbye to all these beautiful people we’ve been in a bus with for almost a month, with which was really sad. It has been such a special tour with such a nice bunch of people, I think we all agreed it was one of the best working groups ever touring together. I tried really hard to not start crying, but in the end I had to give in…

Now I am in Bergen/Norway with lots of fantastic memories that will never leave me. My first long tour with TG turned out way better than we all hoped for! The chemistry between us in the band has always been nice, but grew to an even higher level on the road living so close. We had so much fun together, being very childish, sharing happy moments as well as the days were not everything was so good (as me getting food poisoning or someone missing people at home). Another thing is that we got such a nice and warm welcome in every city. Many people in the audience were very excited and anxious about seeing the “new” The Gathering, but gave us such a nice welcome back in the end! Encores every night!  We couldn’t have dreamt for it any better. Luckily it is not over yet. I am really looking forward to going to Greece in next weekend!

After the show we had a great party in the bus, starting as always with Black Sabbath’s Volume 4 kicking off the night. We discovered it was our tour managers (Sjoerd) birthday was due after midnight, so whiskey and champagne, beer and wine; you name it we drank it! I was amongst the last ones standing going to bed at 7:30 in the morning. Next day was travel day so we were allowed We had a lot of fun, Marjolein was ruling the party! Think she was happy we had next day off

Day off:
Woke up in a beautiful little village in south France, went for a stroll in the sun with some nice people from Autumn, caught up with the René, Gema, Marjolein in a café for breakfast. It was the first day we could really feel the sun warming our pale northern European winter skin! Our sound engineer got his hair shaved off in a hair dressing saloon but by our merch boss, Gema, he looked soo beaoootifoool! We got Sjoerd some nice prezzies and went for a drink in a local bar with extraordinary drawings on the wall and extraordinary people behind the bar. It was all a bit surreal as the bar maid seemed rather drunk (or crazy) and the drawings contained female private parts. This was discovered after we made our orders which turned out very very nice. A quick drink, lots of fun and some nice tapas and we went off all together for a meal singing happy birthday songs for Sjoerd and eating lovely food!

Next day we were in Barcelona, where the rain embraced us as we arrive the venue. Autumn kicked off the night again, doing a great show, and the audience was a really nice crowd making us feel very welcome!

I have to say I never in my wildest dreams thought we would have such a great time on the road. The guys in TG are just the sweetest and funniest (which I of course knew from before, but got even more of on the road). When Frank gets some whiskey down there is no end to his dry jokes, I am laughing so much! Dj René is the ultimate boss kicking off the after party with his excellent DJ’ing using Hans’ superb Ipod collection! Marjolein is, as said before, the queen of the night totally awesome with funny comments and dance moves! Hans tunes in to being the master of jokes, stories from touring and silly comments, so there are big smiles around all the time! The Autumn guys and girl are beyond our dreams of being great band to tour with! Such a great bunch of people! We are having an incredibly time with them!

At least but not last our crew, Wouter, Sjoerd, Linda and Gema, and excellent driver Stefan (haaaaaaaaase) are totally topping the ice cake with their fantastic work and great humour!

Alicante:
I was in Alicante in September last year, and was really looking forward to going back. We woke in a boiling bus a bit outside the city, and the sun hit our..really nice! Did a little stroll in to the city, got some laundry done and had nice lunch. The venue was nice, except for the massive hole in the roof of the showers and backstage where our support band had a lot of fun looking through! Bastards!

Granada: Some of us got up early to get into the city and have a look at this beautiful place, and some of us just went for a little walk in a big group having coffee and tea sitting outside. This is very special for us to do early February, so we were all smiling One even picked an orange from a tree..not sweet enough, but still..just doing it is exotic enough for us up north. Gotta mention the crew of the venue who cared so well for us and had a really cool attitude. Thanks!! The crowd for the night were really awesome giving us and Autumn so much energy. Thanks a million!

Beautiful Madrid. Some times we have time to see a little of the city, but very often we have to park outside and don’t get any chance to see much, as the case here. Just managed a little walk and sit down for a nice cup of coffee. Back in the venue I chatted with some friends of mine from Bergen based band called Audrey Horne, just finishing recording a video in Berlin. Looking forward to the final result as it sounded pretty crazy and full of funky stuff!
Autumn had a good show that night. Fans turned up singing along with their songs and long hair was thrown around everywhere. We also had a good time with the crowd well warmed up by Autumn giving us a great time on stage! Got to meet a few after the show, and all very nice people!

Before I went on tour I bought new socks that I wanted to make sure nobody else had. When washing clothes on tour it can all get mixed up and 15 people all with black socks…..
So I got some silly Hello Kitty socks which of course got some attention. Actually one of the pink ones have been (clean to notice!) moved around in the bus, waking up everyday on a new spot (I think even it has been tweeted slapping René).

Yesterday Marjolein, Frank and me did an in store acoustic show in a massive shop in Lyon. It was my very first one with the guys, but it went really well! We really enjoyed it! And thanks to Claude from the shop who organized everything well for us. Back in the venue we had a marvellous chef cooking brilliant food for us! Two very happy bands and crew Funny what food can do to you! This night we also had French Osm’oz on the bill, a band that has supported TG before. Very nice guys that unfortunately have been through some pretty rough times lately loosing their singer. One thing I noticed with the French audience is that they are really listeners and not talking so much in between the songs. It is a very nice gesture to the band!
We loved it!

Today we are in snowy Switzerland finally back to play the show that was moved last year. Right now we are watching Sesame Street mash up playing Slayer and gangsta rap! Great!

Thinking back it feels like it’s been a long time on the road, but at the same time it has gone soo fast!

Our new super friends in Autumn are such a nice bunch of people. We are having a great time with them! As Marjan said so well: “everyday is Saturday for the next three weeks!”

Our first gig in Krefeld went very well. Autumn kicked off the night wonderfully! It was the very first gig with The Gatherings former bass player, Hugo, in 6 years, and it was so special for me to share a stage with this wonderful musician! He plays his instrument in such a natural and perfect way, and it was as if he still was the bass player of the band. He sure did an excellent job on this tour. As you probably know Marjolein has a day job that required her to work this first week of our Euro tour. A lot of people turned up from several countries for this first gig of the tour! Such a nice crowd

Second day in Erfurt started with having a very nice breakfast and shower in the venue before sound checking. Suddenly the colour in Hugo’s face turned paler and paler, then rather green and off he went. Next stop was the hospital getting some funky stuff to stop his stomach cramps and glucose to give him something to run on. A big pile of vitamins and anti bacterial gels was bought in to everyone on the bus to boost the immune systems and keep the germs at safe distance. Getting the stomach flu flowing on a tour bus is just not handy!

We needed to make a plan B, C, D, E for the nights show. Do we have to cancel the show? Will Hugo manage to play? If yes, how many songs will he manage? Will we manage to play the songs without a bass player? Does anyone in Autumn know the songs? Hugo manage to get up and stand on his feet half an hour before the show, so we go for plan B: he does as many songs as his body allows. This hero manages almost half the set and then his body says Enough!! We go on without him, get an amazing help from the audience who is such a great supporting crowd! Thanks!! Luckily Hugo get to rest well and will be on his feet again the next day.

Berlin the next day runs quite smooth, a good gig, Hugo is back on his feet, not top form, but it is definitely going in the right direction. Autumn did another great show, and I got their song “The heart demands” on my brain…and it stayed there for the next week. Luckily it is a very nice song

After Berlin is a day off and we woke in Karlsruhe were the next gig will be. The nice people at the venue open it so we can get showers and coffee. We wander around a bit then eating some food in the evening. I know when travelling you have be a bit careful with what you eat, and being a Norwegian there are a lot of different bacteria’s my body never tried before. We go to this nice restaurant, everything looks safe and I go for the fish. You know sometimes you just eat food and there is something wrong even though the taste is quite OK. Our beautiful Chilean merch coordinator have a little piece of my food. We leave the restaurant for the bus, and we both meet at some point telling each other that stomach is acting weirdly.
As you might know on a tour bus there are certain rules; toilet can only do the pee so you have to save yourself for when there is a toilet available. We check the nearest restaurant and they are open to midnight in case of emergency. One hour goes and I am parked at the toilet in this place with the worst food poisoning ever! The people in the restaurant are just the nicest, so understanding and giving me water and smiles. Thank you so much!!! Luckily the bus is parked for the night, and our fantastic tour manager Sjoerd is just the sweetest and best friend when my body was just not working at all. He and Hans got me to a hotel nearby so I could be on my own and recover over the night.
Without giving away to many details I am in a pretty poor shape until 6 o’clock in the morning when I finally fall asleep for 1,5 h on the floor. I get to rest the day in the hotel, drinking a few sips of a cola and getting some more sleep later. 18:30 I crawl out of the bed and in the shower half sitting half standing thinking playing a gig in 3 hours seems rather impossible! Somehow I get myself to the venue with help of Sjoerd (man, I own him my life!) and I am on stage with the nicest audience that give me so much energy keeping me through the show. I will never forget you guys!!

Nürnberg is next stop. Breakfast both looked and smelled very nice, but I didn’t manage to eat yet. The guys enjoyed it though. The show of the night went very well, I was still a bit reduced with only half a slice of bread in my body, but crowd was awesome and help me through it! I have to mention two very special persons coming all the way from Mexico joining us on several dates on this tour, including this! Fantastic to have you guys in the audience!!

Our second time in Prague in a half year was a rather colder experience this time. Beautiful city, but so cold we chose to stay inside as much as possible this time. We got to meet our second support act Dying Passion who opened the night well. Our Mexican friends turned up again, and we had a few beers with them after the show. Gig was really nice, the crowd was fantastic, both to Autumn and us! Thank you guys!!

Back in the bus DJ René was boosting the after party with his on the spot techno tunes and Slayer!

Krakow: First I have to say the crowd there was totally awesome! I will never forget it. We have had to do encores every night, but here they even continued after we left stage second time singing “happy birthday” in Polish for TG’s 20 years anniversary..how sweet is that? Everyone we got to meet after the show were really nice people and you all made that day very special for us! Thanks!

In Bratislava most things that could go wrong went wrong except the actual show which went really cool! For some reason the promoter of the venue didn’t want to open it for us as already agreed so we had to wait for hours before we could get in. It is also very handy to just turn off your phone in these situations. Playing the kind of music TG does requires a certain amount of technical equipment, which of course was not provided and needed to be sorted. On top of this Marjolein’s flight to Budapest got cancelled due to heavy snow and needed to be dealt with (that story is involves three airports, one car drive, one bus drive, a few hours sleet at a hotel and several hours of waiting at airports), and the bus needed technical support (not easy during weekend) to be able to drive any further. Our tour manager was definitely reaching his limits when the stage manager just left his desk after Autumns first song. He thought it was much better to have a drink in the bar. During our show he went for a little sleep at the monitor desk… Despite all this the show was really really great, thanks to our amazing crew and the beautiful people turning up for the show!

The early morning of our day in Budapest Hugo was supposed to fly back and Marjolein arrive. But since Marjolein still wasn’t safe in Budapest Hugo rebooked his flight so we were sure to have at least one bass player for the show. We finally got the message Marjolein was on Hungarian ground and in close distance and Hugo could book his flight. We arrived in the most beautiful winter wonderland, and got such a warm welcome by the crew of the venue. The ladies in charge of catering needs to be mentioned here as they did an absolutely amazing job with the food and making us feel so good.! The chef spent 8 hours cooking for us, and boy could we taste that! It was 16 veeeeeeeery happy people that day! The time came when our Marjolein arrived just for sound check and Hugo was leaving us to go home to his family. It was a really special moment for all of us. He did such a good job and was such a nice person to be around! We hope you are happy at home, but we still miss you here! It was of course also very good to have our sweet Marjolein back in the line rocking with us! Show was really special as the atmosphere of the venue and the people were so nice. Thanks so much for the special day!!

Yesterday we played the hottest show of the tour. I think we can say it was freezing outside, but steaming hot on stage in Zagreb But it was such a good show! Nice to spill some sweat while rocking!;) We had a great time, and Bobo (our promoter there) was such a good guy treating us very well! We did a few interviews and even the Zagreb 1 TV channel filmed a bit of our show.

Now Milano: It is 9 degrees Celsius here….As our sweet Gema would say it: it’s beaoooooitfoooool :)
